Open Street Maps FAQ and Troubleshooting
Do I need an API key?
No. The default OpenStreetMap Standard style and the free address lookup work without a key. You only need a key for Stadia Maps styles (or a registered domain), a custom tile provider, or a paid lookup service.
The map is blank or grey on my live site
- Using a Stadia Maps style? Stadia only serves maps to domains registered in your Stadia account, or with an API key. It works on a local site without either, which is why it can look fine while you build. Add your domain in Stadia or enter the Stadia Maps API Key, or switch back to OpenStreetMap Standard.
- Using Custom? Check the tile URL includes
{z},{x}and{y}and any key the provider needs. - Caching or optimisation plugins that combine or delay JavaScript can stop maps loading. Exclude the Open Street Maps and Leaflet scripts.
There's no map on a listing
- Check Hide Map isn't ticked in the listing's address box.
- Check the listing has an address. If the address couldn't be found, edit the listing and drag the pin onto the property. See Listing maps and coordinates.
The pin is in the wrong place
Edit the listing, drag the pin (or click on the map) to the right spot and update the listing. Your coordinates are kept from then on.
Some addresses aren't found
New streets can take a while to be added to OpenStreetMap. Set the pin by hand for those listings. See Looking up coordinates for all listings.
A listing isn't on the results map
Results maps only show published listings with coordinates and Display Street Address ticked, and by default only current listings. Use status="all" or status="sold" to include others. Withdrawn and off market listings are never shown on results maps.
The zoom buttons are underlined or look wrong
Some themes style every link in the page content. Open Street Maps overrides this for its own maps; if your theme still affects them, add to your theme's custom CSS:
.leaflet-container .leaflet-bar a { text-decoration: none; }
Can I use it with Advanced Mapping?
Advanced Mapping is a separate add-on that uses Google Maps for its own maps and [advanced_map] shortcode. If you use both, keep your Google Maps API key in the Easy Property Listings settings for Advanced Mapping, and check your listing pages show the map you want.
Is the street address shared when Display Street Address is off?
Not by the map. It shows a shaded suburb area, and the listing's own coordinates and address aren't included in the map. These listings are also left off results maps.
What data is sent to OpenStreetMap?
Visitors' browsers load map images from the map style provider, as with any online map. Address lookups are made by your web server, not by visitors, and include your site address and the contact email you set. Results are stored on the listing so each address is only looked up once.
